The Centre for Scottish Culture was delighted to learn that our PhD candidate, Sylvia Valentine, has recently succeeded in publishing some of her exciting research!
Sylvia’s article, ‘Meet the vegetarian anti-vaxxers who led the smallpox inoculation backlash in Victorian Britain’, appeared in the most recent issue of Little Doric: The Journal of the Aberdeen Branch of the Dickens Fellowship. Based on her important doctoral research, Sylvia’s article explores the role of vegetarians and animal-rights activists in resistance to the 19th-century programme of compulsory inoculation against smallpox. The article shows how these groups formed sophisticated networks, both in Scotland and across Britain, to lobby against mandatory vaccination, largely on health and ethical grounds.
Sylvia’s article was originally published in The Conversation, and can be accessed here.
